SPARK’S 3 LITTLE PIGS BIOGAS PLANT HAS WON 2019 DESIGN POWER 100 ANNUAL ECO-FRIENDLY DESIGN AWARDS

The 2019 DESIGN POWER 100 annual awards were officially announced on August 21, 2020. SPARK’s “3 Little Pigs” biogas plant after being listed on the chart of 2019 DESIGN POWER 100, stood out from 400 works through various selections, and finally won the 2019 DESIGN POWER 100 annual eco-friendly design award. At the same time, the mascot of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics “Bing Dun Dun” and the Forbidden City Cultural won the annual awards in other categories.

SAPRK’s “3 Little Pigs” biogas plant

In the Chinese year of the pig, SPARK launches “3 little pigs” in support of 22nd March 2019 World Water day. “3 Little Pigs” has been developed to positively treat effluents generated by stock farming at source rather than the common practice of letting it passively drain into the fresh water system. It is an easily transportable energy device that can convert livestock and poultry manure into biogas and fertiliser.

“3 Little Pigs“ supports the Chinese Government’s efforts to tackle the countrywide problem water pollution caused by animal farming. The indiscriminate discharge of livestock manure is probably the major cause of eutrophication in China’s lakes, undermining the quality of the fresh water supply, killing fish and the loss of amenity value of China’s beautiful lakes.

The impact of China’s agricultural transition, the surging appetite for meat and the associated expansion of farm size resulted in 30% to 70% of manure being dumped directly into rivers.

SAPRK’s “3 Little Pigs” biogas plant: 360° lifecycle proposal

SPARK’s 3 Little Pigs is a 360 degree lifecycle proposal that provides small pig farms with a system that positively manages Pig manure and turns into biogas and fertiliser; this has the key advantage of keeping the manure out of the fresh water system eliminating dangerous water eutrophication (when a body of water becomes overly enriched with minerals and nutrients) increasing growth of plants and algae and killing aquatic life through oxygen depletion in the water.

SPARK’s 3 little Pigs biogas plant is composed of 2 elements, the fiberglass biogas dome and pig shaped double membrane PVC gas holders. The biogas dome is manufactured from fiberglass and buried underground, the dome is an anaerobic digester and converts the Pig manure to biogas. The gas can be used for cooking and heating or generating electricity. The gas created in the dome is stored under pressure in 3 custom Pig shaped double membrane PVC envelopes that have a combined capacity of 400 cubic meters. The gas dome and gas holders are easily transportable and reusable so can be move to different locations if required.
