SPARK IN THE DOGHOUSE UPDATE

Following an internal design competition across SPARK’s studios 3 doghouse designs were selected for testing, modelling and fabrication. 2 of the 3 competition winning proposals have been amalgamated into one– the PET house, the second design Reservoir Dogs has been retained as conceived and is being further developed in readiness for BowWowHaus’ spring auction in London.

SPARK will be issuing further news updates as the Doghouses are developed and constructed in our Singapore studio workshop… As Blackadder’s Flashheart would say, “Woof Woof” .

PET house

Polyethylene terephthalate commonly abbreviated PET is the most common thermoplastic polymer used for plastic containers primarily  bottle production.

A million plastic bottles are bought around the world every minute, more than 480bn plastic drinking bottles were sold in 2016 around the world, equivalent to about 20,000 bottles being bought every second.

PET is highly recyclable but fewer than half of the bottles bought in 2016 were collected for recycling, unfortunately, most plastic bottles produced end up in landfill or in the ocean.

Between 8 million tonnes of plastic leaks into the world’s oceans each year, which is then ingested by sea birds, fish and other organisms. By 2050 the ocean will contain more plastic by weight than fish.

SPARK has used the opportunity of designing a doghouse for BowWowHouse to highlight the global problem caused by the flagrant use and dumping of plastic.

We have upcycled “PET” plastic water bottles to form a lightweight doghouse.

The bottles are tied together using bespoke 3 prong recycled plastic propeller gaskets, and clipped to a simple basket plastic frame, the frame is covered by a waterproof polymeric membrane that also provides and insulated ground blanket.

Reservoir Dogs

A terrace in the round of varying sizes of doghouses with a central drinking bowl forms SPARK’s convivial Reservoir Dogs. The terrace is composed of unique doghouses fabricated from a variety of recycled materials. When placed side by side they create an interesting assemblage appropriate for different breeds and sizes of dogs. Perhaps suitable for the eponymous pet walker who has on a typical outing many animals in their charge.

A fun canine interpretation of the Tarantino Hollywood movie’s unusual cast list …Mr White, Mr Orange, Mr Pink, Mr Blue etc all can find their pied-à-terre at SPARK’s Reservoir Dogs.
