SPARK’s Hengsha master plan is located southeast of Shanghai in the Yangtze Delta. The site currently forms part of the estuary port facilities of the city. The Yangtze River discharges huge amounts of sediment each year into the sea. The sediment created the landforms that exist in the estuary, these sedimentary flows inspired the master plan’s geometric network. SPARK’s proposal is a visionary planning and social mix of industrial food production with living, working and tourism. The development demonstrates that integrating food and agricultural production with commercial enterprise, residential, tourism and ecology is economically and socially sustainable. SPARK’s master plan is organised around a green connecting landscape loop called the Path of Discovery. The tree-lined path accommodates pedestrians and cyclists and links all zones of the development together from the waterfront dining zone in the south to the discovery pavilions, hotels and wetlands. The Hengsha development will eventually be home to around 20,000 people living and working amongst the architectural landmarks that symbolise the project: Experimental Greenhouses, Waterfront Dining Pavilions, Oyster Hill Hotel and the Fish Market.
