Shekou Gateway One is located at Seaworld, Shenzhen. The project includes a 100m office tower, coach park and a 3 storey naturally ventilated retail mall consisting of 5 pavilions linked by galleries and terraces. Spark’s role concentrates on the architectural expression of the mall and office tower which draws from the site’s unique geographical location between the mountains and sea. The proposal develops the idea of land erosion, sculpted topographical rock strata like facades wrap the retail development and form a rustic base for the office tower. The selected materials for the facade are a rich palette of tactile contrasts- protrusions, recesses, textured stone and reflective metals while addressing the commercial requirements of the mall using extensive areas of glass, advertising panels and LED displays. The central pavilion of the mall is expressed as a lantern in a garden, a beacon visible from the streets highlighting its presence to the local community.
