SPARK’s design of Greenland Yiwu pays homage to traditional regional architecture in an innovative contemporary manner that befits YiWu’s status as a leader in China’s small commodities market. Courtyard buildings wrapping layered public spaces imbue the development with the local cultural quality found in the old town of YiWu. This unique aesthetic provides a memorable backdrop to the premium mix of retail outlets and eateries, which deliver a vibrant shopping and leisure experience.
The master plan responds to the demanding requirements of modern retailing by combining the “mall” environment with recreated lane patterns to provide an intelligent alternative urban narrative. Shoppers can enjoy shopping for international branded goods in flagship mall stores or they can enjoy a more convivial moment strolling past lifestyle stores in the lanes that weave through the development connecting the existing street pattern with the new development. Emphasis is placed on the quality of the public environment and the ambition that project should fulfil the traditional role of gathering point. The public spaces have the potential for organised events or informal gathering all of which create a new public focussed infrastructural addition to the city.
