The project at Donghuicheng retail street is part of a much larger residential development that services recent office developments around the new Science Town of eastern Guangzhou. Comprising 31,000 sqm of retail, SOHO and public facilities, Spark’s scheme “The Urban Village” embodies the client’s ambition to establish a new benchmark for “modern Chinese living” with an emphasis on quality and heritage. The retail components are arranged in a village-like configuration, allowing visitors to meander through the intimately-scaled streets and squares. Influenced by traditional Chinese screens, inserted box canopies in the landscape frame views of courtyards as you walk through the streets. The box language extends to the SOHO building as pop-out balconies creating a three-dimensional hillside backdrop. Traditional Chinese building materials such as brick and willow pattern ceramics are used throughout the scheme generating a palette and mix of east and west, old and new.
