SPARK won this competition to transform a former theatre and newspaper office headquarters into a multi-function centre for culture and entertainment in Ningbo. After its restoration, extension and conversion, the centre will form the cultural nucleus of the city. It will contain diverse facilities with a focus on the idea of temporality to ensure the re-purposed building’s longevity through dynamic and flexible spaces, including an auditorium, cinema, restaurants, creche, education facilities, retail, shared working facilities and SOHO apartments. The centre given its position adjacent to Ningbo’s river promenade and green belt will provide the setting for social events further connecting the building to the vibrant cultural life of the city.
The transformed interiors provide spatial experiences and visual links across the diverse building functions. The old building structure is topped by a new “restaurant beam” offering exceptional views over the river and its pedestrian terraces.
