120m | Placemaking, Landmark

The cross-line bridge is located in Jiangxinzhou, Nanjing, and can be said to be located in the physical center of Nanjing City.

SPARK has designed what is believed to be the antithesis of the current trend towards overtly structurally gymnastic bridges that have dominated the genre of bridge design in the last 20 years. SPARK’s ambition was to provide the city of Nanjing with a beautifully sculpted object, a fluid silhouette that represents the culture of modern Nanjing.

Placed in this pivotal position, the bridge will knit together and build upon the areas existing infrastructure creating a new transport flow for the area. It also has the opportunity to engage positively with the public realm as it straddles a new public park. Making seamless connections with the park is an important component of our design. The 120-metres bridge pylon has been designed to form a portal arc over the road, a powerful symbol of movement, gateway and threshold, it will be illuminated at night to form a glowing but subtle loop of light.

In establishing a direct link between 2 districts divided by Yangtze River and the 2 districts of the island. This new bridge will complete the long-planned stretch of the Nanjing road network. Beyond improving access, the Yangtze Pearl creates a new unique, vibrant and celebratory identity for the area.
